I don’t think any pair of quotes will sum up the situation in Ireland better than these two:

Above all else, one thing strikes me about the media commentary and analysis of the TV3 report about Brian Lenihan’s illness. Statements like these:
“Oh, well, obviously there was a rumour doing the rounds”….
“It was understood that the Minister would make a statement in January”
“Most newsrooms had the story, but decided not to run it out [...]
Most of the discussion in the 24 hours since TV3 broke the news of the Minister for Finance’s illness has centered on the propriety, or otherwise, of the report itself.
